How to Make a Frontline Hero Bear

The Frontline Hero Bear Pattern is a crochet pattern created to honor our Frontliners. As we do our part by staying home, our Medical and other essential Frontliners are out there fighting to keep us safe.



Materials Needed for the Frontline Hero Bear:

Medium Worsted Yarn

Bear skin tone of choice

Scrubs color of choice

Black for nose, eyes, mouth

White Yarn for mask

3.5mm hook

Tapestry Needle

Stuffing (Fiber fill)


US Terminology


Note: For beginners, it would be to stuff as you go.


Definition of Terms:

SC - Single Crochet

HDC - Half Double Crochet

MR - Magic Ring

ST/STS - Stitch / Stitches

CH - Chain

INC - Increase

DEC - Decrease

FL - Front Loop

BL - Back Loop


LEGS of the Frontline Hero Bear

1) Start with bear skin tone yarn. MR then 6 SC (6)

2) INC each ST. (12)

3) 1 SC then INC. Repeat until end of row. (18)

4) 1 SC each ST (18) - Total of 2 Rows

5) Change to scrubs yarn color of choice. FL only. 1 SC next 2 stitches then INC. Repeat until end of row. (24)

6) BL only. 1 SC each ST. (24)

7) 1 SC each ST. (24) - Total of 6 Rows

8) Repeat steps 1 to 7 for other leg.


BODY of Frontline Hero Bear

1) Continue with scrubs yarn color of choice. Connect legs together by 1 SC each ST (48)

2) 1 SC each ST (48) - 3 Rows. If there is a hole in between the legs, use the yarn tail from one of the legs and sew it shut.

3) FL only. 1 SC next 7 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (54)

4) BL only. 1 SC each ST (54)

5) 1 SC each ST (54) - Total of 1 Row

6) 1 SC next 7 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (48)

7) 1 SC each ST (48) - Total of 2 Rows

8) 1 SC next 6 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (42)

9) 1 SC each ST (42) - Total of 2 Rows

10) 1 SC next 5 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (36)

11) 1 SC each ST (36) - Total of 1 Row

12) 1 SC next 4 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row.(30)

13) 1 SC next 3 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row.(24)

14) 1 SC each ST (24) - Total of 1 Row



HEAD of the Frontline Hero Bear

1) Continue from body but change yarn color to bear skin tone. FL only. INC each ST (48)

2) 1 SC each ST (48)

3) 1 SC next 7 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (54)

4) 1 SC each ST (54) - Total of 9 Rows

5) 1 SC next 7 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (48)

6) 1 SC each ST (48) - Total of 1 Row

7) 1 SC next 6 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (42)

8) 1 SC each ST (42) - Total of 1 Row

9) 1 SC next 5 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (36)

10) 1 SC next 4 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (30)

11) 1 SC next 3 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (24)

12) 1 SC next 2 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (18)

13) 1 SC then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (12)

14) DEC until end of Row (6)

15) Sew hole shut.


ARMS of Frontline Hero Bear

1) Start with bear skin tone yarn. MR, then 6 SC (6)

2) INC each ST (12)

3) 1 SC each ST (12) - Total of 7 Rows

4) Change to scrubs yarn color of choice. FL only. 1 SC then INC. Repeat until end of row (18)

5) BL only. 1 SC each ST (18)

6) 1 SC each ST (18) - Total of 2 Rows

7) 1 SC then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (12)

8) 1 SC each ST (12)

9) Repeat for other arm

Sewing of Arms:

* Counting from the top of the body, arms are sewn below the second row and 9 STS apart.



EARS of the Frontline Hero Bear

1) Use bear skin tone yarn. MR then 6 SC (6)

2) INC each ST (12)

3) 1 SC then INC. Repeat until end of row. (18)

4) 1 SC next 2 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (24)

5) 1 SC each ST (24) - Total of 2 rows

6) 1 SC next 2 STS then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (18)

7) 1 SC then DEC. Repeat until end of row. (12)

8) Repeat for other ear.

Sewing of Ears:

* Start sewing on the seventh (7th) row from the top of the head.

* Distance between ears (from the front portion of the face) will be 26 STS

* The ears will be sewn on a total of 6 Rows down (vertical).


NOSE of the Frontline Hero Bear

Sewing / Embroidery of Nose:

* Counting from the bottom portion of the head (where body and head meet), you can start sewing on the 7th and 8th rows (2 rows total for the height of the nose).

* Mark the middle of the face at the bottom of the 7th row. This will serve as the tip of the bottom part of the nose.

* The nose in the picture is 2 rows tall (vertical) and 6 STS wide (horizontal). Go back and forth with embroidering the nose until you get the desired thickness and shape of an inverted triangle. You may also use a triangular safety nose if that is preferred.


EYES of the Frontline Hero Bear

Sewing / Embroidery of Eyes:

* Eyes are embroidered 1 row above the nose.

* Skip 1 ST on both sides of the nose and start sewing the black yarn back and forth until the desired thickness is achieved. The eyes are 2 rows in height.

* You may also use any size of safety eyes if that is preferred.


CAP of the Frontline Hero Bear

1) Use the scrubs yarn color of choice. MR the 6 SC (6)

2) INC each ST (12)

3) 1 SC then INC. Repeat until end of row. (18)

4) 1 SC next 2 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (24)

5) 1 SC next 3 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (30)

6) 1 SC next 4 STS then INC. Repeat until end of row. (36)

Note: Steps 1 to 6 are done in the round. Steps 7 to 12 will be done back and forth, which means you will TURN after every row. This is to create the hole to accommodate the ears of the bear.

7) 1 SC next 5 STS then INC. Repeat 2 more times (21). Turn.

8) 1 SC each ST (21) - Total of 1 row. Turn.

9) 1 SC next 6 STS then INC. Repeat 2 more times (24). Turn.

10) 1 SC each ST (24) - Total of 1 row. Turn.

11) 1 SC next 7 STS then INC. Repeat 2 more times (27). Turn.

12) 1 SC each ST (27) - Total of 2 rows

Note: After you have done the first half, leave a small yarn tail and cut yarn. Move to second half. Repeat rows 7 to 12 on the second half. Once both sides of the cap are complete, do not cut yarn. Move to Row 13. Row 13 will be completed by crocheting in the round.

13) 1 SC each ST (54) - Total of 2 Rows



MASK of the Frontline Hero Bear

1) Use white yarn. CH 13 Turn.

2) Starting from the second chain from hook, 1 SC next 4 STS, 1 HDC next 4 STS, 1 SC remaining 4 STS (12). Turn.

3) Repeat 1 SC next 4 STS, 1 HDC next 4 STS, 1 SC remaining 4 STS until you reach a total of 5 Rows. (Always turn after every row is done)

4) CH 27 and connect it to the first ST on the other end of the mask. 1 SC each ST until you reach the end of the row and CH 27 for the second strap of the mask. Connect it it to the first ST on the other side of the mask and 1 SC each ST until you reach the end. Bind off and sew in ends.

Note: The number of chains may be adjusted depending on the desired mask tightness on the bear’s face.
