Oz, the Lion Dance Dollie

By Aixan Legasto of Yarn It, Darn It

A little trivia about the name of the doll: Oz was the name of our beloved Shih Tzu who crossed the rainbow bridge in 2017. The doll reminds me of him and so, I think naming it after our Ozzy Wozzy would be a loving way to remember him by.

White Row 1: White part of eyes (White yarn). Ch 2+1. Skip 1ch. Turn.

White Row 2: 1sc, 4sc in the 2nd chain. Start working in the bottom (opposite part) of the chain. 1sc. Turn. (6)

White Row 3: Chain 1. 1sc, Inc 4x, 1sc. (10). Do not turn. Work on the bottom (flat portion) of the eyes by 1sc each st (should have a total of 5sc). Cut enough yarn for sewing.

Black Row 1: Black part of the eyes. Ch 2+1. Skip 1ch. Turn.

Black Row 2: 1sc, 4sc in the 2nd chain. Cut enough yarn for sewing.

* Sew black part of the eyes onto the white part. Repeat for the other eye.

Sewing of Eyes and Eyebrows:

Sew the eyes 2 rows above the bottom of the main part of the head and 6sts apart from each other. Make sure that you mark the center of the head. (Tip: The bottom “skirt” of the head consists of 6 wave sets. You can determine the center of the head by locating the space in between the 3rd and 4rd wave.

Each eye will take up 5sts across and will be 5 rows tall.

Inner Eyebrows: For the doll in the picture, I added single crochets onto the spaces directly on the same spot the eyes were sewn. If this is too tedious or difficult, you may crochet chains long enough to wrap around the curve of the eyes (amount of chains will depend on your tension. Just make sure that the length of chain should be enough to wrap around the curved section of the eyes). Use Accent 1 yarn color of choice.

Outer Eyebrows: Same step as inner eyebrows. Place it onto the space right after the inner eyebrows. Use Accent 2 yarn color of choice.

Note: You can also opt to interchange the colors of the inner and outer eyebrows, or you could go for other colors of your choice as well.

Nose Accent (total of 3 rows):

Row 1: Main color of choice. MR then 6sc (6)

Row 2: Inc, 1sc next 2sts, Inc, 1sc remaining 2sts. (8)

Row 3: 1sc each st (8) - 1 row only

* Repeat for other nose accent

* Sew nose below the eyes, 2 sts apart (from the center)

Note: Although I did not use stuffing for the nose, you could opt to do so.

Horn (total of 8 rows):

Row 1: Main color of choice. MR then 4sc (4)

Row 2: Inc, 1sc next st, Inc, 1sc remaining st. (6)

Row 3: Inc, 1sc next 2sts, Inc, 1sc remaining 2sts. (8)

Row 4: Inc, 1sc next 3sts, Inc, 1sc remaining 3sts. (10)

Row 5: Inc, 1sc next 4sts, Inc, 1sc remaining 4sts. (12)

Row 6: 1sc each st. (12) - 1 row only.

Rows 7 to 8: Change to yarn Accent 1 color of choice. 1sc each st. (12) - total of 2 rows.

Rows 4 to 6: 1sc each st. (10) - total of 3 rows

Row 7: Dec, 1sc next 3sts, Dec, 1sc remaining 3sts. (8). Cut enough yarn for sewing.

* Repeat for other ear

Sewing of Ears:

Sew ears 3 rows away from eyes and 4 rows tall (Rows 8 to 11).

Mouth (total of 6 rows):

Row 1: Use black yarn. MR then 6sc (6)

Row 2: Inc each st. (12)

Row 3: 1sc then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (18)

Row 4: 1sc next 2sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (24)

Row 5: Change to Accent 1 yarn color of choice. Fold the black circle in half (half moon shape) and crochet 1sc next 3sts then Inc. Repeat 3 times (15 sts total). Make sure to crochet into the front and back stitches to close the curve portion of the mouth.

Continuation of Row 5: Do not turn. Work on the flat portion of the mouth by adding 8sc stitches in total.

Row 6: Continue working on the curved portion of the mouth by 1sc then Inc. Repeat until the end of the row (you will end with a single crochet in the last st.)

Cut enough yarn for sewing mouth onto the bottom of the head.

Sewing of Mouth:

Mark the middle portion of the bottom of the head. To make it easy to sew into a straight line, you can sew a running stitch marker as a guide. Naturally, the opening of the mouth should be on the same side where the eyes are sewn.

Main Body (total of 1 chain row and 14 regular rows):

Note: Rows 1 to 6, turn after each row.

Chain 10+1. Skip 1 ch. Turn

Row 1: 1sc next 9sts, 4sc into the 10th st. Work on the other side of the chain by 1sc remaining 9sts. Turn. (22)

Row 2: Chain 1. 1sc next 9sts, Inc 4x, 1sc remaining 9sts. Turn. (26)

Row 3: Chain 1. 1sc next 9sts, 1sc then Inc 4x, 1sc remaining 9sts. Turn. (30)

Row 4: Chain 1. 1sc next 9sts, 1sc next 2sts then Inc 4x, 1sc remaining 9sts. Turn. (34)

Row 5: Chain 1. 1sc next 9sts, 1sc next 3sts then Inc 4x, 1sc remaining 9sts. Turn. (38)

Row 6: Chain 1. 1sc next 9sts, 1sc next 4sts then Inc 4x, 1sc remaining 9sts. Do not turn. Add 12sc stitches onto the flat portion of the main body. (54). If there are large holes where the beginning chains are located, simply sew it shut.

Note: Rows 7 to 10, crochet in the round.

Rows 7 to 9: Crochet in the round. 1sc each st. (54) - Do this for a total of 3 rows.

Row 10: BL only. 1sc each st. (54)

Rows 11 to 13: 1sc each st. (54) - total of 3 rows.

Row 14: FL only. Use shell stitch for this row. (1sc, skip 1 st, 5hdc in next row, skip 1 st). Repeat until end of row. By the end of the row, you will have an extra stitch. Simply add a slst onto it. Cut enough yarn to weave ends.

Remember the other exposed FL? Also add a shell stitch row. Weave ends. You will have a total of 2 shell stitch rows.

Add a contrast border onto the shell stitch rows by using the Accent 1 yarn color of choice (1sc each st until the end of the row). Weave ends.

Tail (total of 6 rows):

Row 1: Main color of choice. MR then 4sc (4)

Row 2: Inc each st. (8)

Row 3: Inc, 1sc next 3sts, Inc, 1sc remaining 3sts. (10)

Rows 4 to 5: 1sc each st. (10) - total of 2 rows

Row 6: Dec, 1sc next 3sts, Dec, 1sc remaining 3sts. (8)

Cut enough yarn for sewing. Sew onto the back portion of the main body. Sew it a bit higher tail look, or nearer the top ruffles portion for a more lowered tail look.

Note: For the doll in the picture, the tail was sewn in between rows 4 to 5 (counting from the first set of ruffles upward)

Bottom of the Body:

(Use main color of choice) For the bottom of the body, follow steps 1 to 7 of Main Body. Sew the bottom of the body onto the exposed back loop inside the main body. Stuff the body as you go. Before sewing the bottom part of the body the main part, it is important to sew the head to the main body first (check tip below)

Tip for sewing Head onto the Main Body:

I find it easier to sew the head onto the body before closing the bottom of the body. Use a separate yarn string for sewing the body to the head. Position the flat portion of the body at the back of the mouth and make sure that it is centered before sewing. You may also sew the tail onto the body while the bottom is still open.

Feet / Legs (total of 6 rows):

Row 1: Use Accent 1 yarn color of choice. MR then 6sc (6)

Row 2: Inc each st. (12)

Rows 3 to 4: 1sc each st. (12) - total of 2 rows

Rows 5 to 6: Change to Main color of choice. 1sc each st. (12) - total of 2 rows

Repeat for 3 more legs. Sew onto the bottom of the body.

Note: Add stuffing before sewing onto the bottom part of the body.

Tip for Sewing Legs:

There are two ways to sew the legs onto the body. One way is to do it AFTER the bottom of the body is sewn onto the main part. The other is to sew the legs onto the bottom part of the body BEFORE it is sewn onto the main part. Personally, I find the latter easier to accomplish.

Happy Crocheting!
