Stay At Home Bear Accessories

Updated: May 3, 2020

by Aixan Legasto of Yarn It, Darn It

The Frontline Hero Bear pattern, over this past month, has become a base pattern to create an amazing array of key workers, from Police Officers to Postal Employees and many more. In this time of uncertainty, we have become more aware and appreciative of all our key workers worldwide and had shown it by making bear versions of those who are important to us.

However, let us not forget that we also play an important part by staying at home. As such, it would also be nice to create a bear that represents who we are right now.

The Stay At Home Bear is based on the Frontline Hero Bear pattern. Since the pattern is fairly simple, it allows many design alterations to be done. Here are some accessories that you might like to add to your own Stay At Home Bear.

Materials Needed:

3.5mm hook

Medium Worsted Yarn (any color of your choice)

Stuffing

Tapestry Needle

Scissors

Optional: plastic corrugated board (for bottom of bunny slipper)

Definition of Terms:

SC - Single Crochet

SL ST - Slip Stitch

HDC - Half Double Crochet

MR - Magic Ring

ST/STS - Stitch / Stitches

CH - Chain

INC - Increase

DEC - Decrease

FL - Front Loop

BL - Back Loop

US Terminology

Beginner to Intermediate Level

Big Bunny Slippers for Your Bear:

1)    MR then 6sc (6)

2)    Inc each st (12)

3)    1sc then Inc. Repeat until end of row (18)

4)    1sc next 2 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of Row (24)

5)    1sc next 3 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of Row (30)

6)    1sc each st. (30). - Total of 3 Rows

7)    1sc next 3 sts. Dec 12x. 1sc remaining 3 sts (18)

8)    1sc next 7 sts. Sl st in next st (8th stitch in the row).

a) Ch 10. Turn (This is where you will start working on the chain for the bunny ears). 1 sl st on the 2nd chain from hook. 1sc on next st. 5 hdc on next 5 sts. 1 sc on next st. 1 sl st on last st.

b) (Back to working on the body) 1 sl st on next 2 sts on the main part of the slipper (9th and 10th stitches in the row).

c) Repeat step 8a for second bunny ear.

d) (Back to working on the body) 1 sl st on the next st of the main part of the slipper (11th stitch in the row).

e) 1sc remaining 7 sts. Cut enough yarn tail for sewing.

9) Repeat for other Slipper.

Note: Stuff the slippers before sewing it on the bear's feet.

Option for Flat Slipper Bottom:

1) For step #6, for the first row, 1sc each st on the BL only. For the next 2 rows, 1sc each st back on both loops.

2) To help the slippers stay flat, cut out a piece of plastic corrugated board or any washable / waterproof material of choice, about the size of the bottom of the slipper. Slip it inside before stuffing the slippers and sewing onto the feet of the bear.

Collar:

1) Ch 24. Turn.

2) 1sc each st (24). Do this for a total of 3 rows.

3) Leave a long tail for sewing.

4) Find the middle of the front portion of the bear’s body and sew the collar on the last row of the body (before the start of the head, which should also have 24 stitches).

Note: It would be ideal if a row of the head portion is done before sewing, in order to gauge where to sew the collar. In addition to this, sewing the collar on before adding stuffing is recommended to make it easier to accomplish and prevent the stuffing from getting caught in between the stitches.

Hair Rollers:

1) (Recommended yarn color for hair roller - pink) MR then 5 sc (5)

2) Inc each st (10)

3) BL only. 1 sc each st.

4) 1sc each st. Total of 5 Rows.

5) BL only. Dec until end of row (5)

6) Stuff hair roller before sewing hole.

7) For the hair on the rollers, wrap the yarn color of choice multiple times around it. Make sure that the yarn is kept in the middle portion of the roller. To keep the yarn from moving or unraveling, sew the tails into the roller. Tie a knot using both ends of the yarn (yarn used for hair). Use the excess yarn tails to sew the hair roller into place.

8) Using the same color of yarn as the hair roller, sew a line from one side of the roller to the other. Sew ends in roller (just like when sewing tails of arms, ears, etc.). You may also use the excess yarn tail from the hair roller to make the line.

Coffee Cup:

1) Use coffee color yarn of choice. MR then 6sc (6)

2) Inc each st (12)

3) 1sc then Inc. Repeat until end of Row (18)

4) Cut enough yarn for sewing. Set aside.

5) Use color of choice for coffee cup. MR then 6sc (6)

6) Inc each st. (12)

7) BL only. 1sc each st. (12)

8) 1sc then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (18)

9) 1sc each st. Total of 3 rows.

10) Do not cut coffee cup yarn. Sew coffee color round piece onto the Back Loop of the top row of coffee cup. Add stuffing as you sew.

11) Continue with coffee cup yarn. Using the remaining FL of the row, 1sc each st. You should still have 18 sts total for this row.

12) Chain 9 (This will serve as the base for the handle)

13) Connect the chain on the bottom part of the coffee cup (where the exposed front loop is located). Try sewing on a sturdy st to keep the handle in place. Turn.

14) Add 9sc stitches over the chain to make a sturdier handle. Cut yarn and sew to the top portion of the handle to keep it in place. Sew ends.

Hair:

1) MR then 6sc (6)

2) Inc each st (12)

3) 1sc then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (18)

4) 1sc next 2 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (24)

5) 1sc next 3 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (30)

6) 1sc next 4 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (36)

7) 1sc next 5 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (42)

8) 1sc each st. (42). Total of 1 row.

9) 1sc next 6 sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (48)

10) 1sc each st. (48). Total of 1 row.

11) 1sc next 7sts then Inc. Repeat until end of row. (54)

12) 1sc each st. (54). Total of 1 row.

13) sl st first stitch and Chain 50. Sl st next st. Repeat 9x (total of 18 sts).

a) 1hdc next 11 sts.

b) 1sc next st.

c) 1 sl next st.

d) 1sc next st.

e) 1hdc next 4 sts.

f) sl st first stitch and Chain 50. Sl st next st. Repeat 8x (total of 18 sts).

Note: Sew the ears onto the hair / wig before sewing it on the bear’s head.

Happy Crocheting!
